Documentaires als Capitalism, a Love Story en Inside Job proberen de financiële crisis te verklaren. Recent verscheen een volgende in deze ‘serie’: The Flaw, what happens if the rich get richer van Stephen Lambert.
Door z’n vormgeving, maar vooral door de inhoud werpt deze documentaire nieuw licht op het ontstaan van de crisis en op wat we kunnen doen om een volgende te voorkomen. Uit de synopsis op de site van The Flaw:
In oktober 2008 verklaarde Alan Greenspan voor het Congres dat hij te veel vertrouwen had gehad in de zelf-corrigerende kracht van de vrije-markt-economie. En dat hij niet goed de vernietigende werking van de hypotheek-bubble, die in de jaren ervoor was ontstaan, had voorzien.
The Flaw onderzoekt de oorzaken van die crisis diepgaander dan enige documentaire ervoor. Door interviews met werelds meest vooraanstaande economen, onder wie huisvesting-expert Robert Shiller, Nobelprijs winnaar Joseph Stiglitz, economisch historicus Louis Hyman, maar ook slachtoffers van de crisis zoals Ed Andrews, voormalig economie correspondent voor The New York Times, die zelf uit zijn koopwoning werd gezet en Andrew Luan, eens aandelenhandelaar van Deutsche Bank die nu rondleidingen geeft op Wall Street.
Waar de film vooral op ingaat is de toenemende inkomenskloof die in Amerika, maar ook elders in de rijke landen, extreem is toegenomen en nog steeds toeneemt. Als we die ongelijkheid, ontstaan is door ‘een fout in het systeem’ niet aanpakken, is een volgende crisis onvermijdelijk, en misschien niet meer – zoals nu nog wel – te boven te komen. Wat de film duidelijk maakt is dat de enorme groei die rijke landen voor 2008 doormaakten voor het overgrote deel ten goede is gekomen aan enkele procenten van de bevolking. Het overgrote deel, zeker 95% heeft weinig tot niets gemerkt van de verdubbeling van het gemiddelde inkomen in het afgelopen decennium.

Kan het niet beter verwoorden als Krishnamurti: “We are facing a tremendous crisis; a crisis which the politicians can never solve because they are programmed to think in a particular way—nor can the scientists understand or solve the crisis; nor yet the business world, the world of money.
The turning point, the perceptive decision, the challenge, is not in politics, in religion, in the scientific world; it is in our consciousness. One has to understand the consciousness of mankind, which has brought us to this point
Understanding the consciousness of mankind is no difficult job. Understanding any crisis is much more difficult. The clue about consciousness is that it is simple: it is ONE. Any mathematician would know that it is the ONE that counts. Without ONE no number can exist. Ancient philosophers and wise people have always told us to look at the ONE. That ONE is what Man really is. Man is not double. We are all One family: brothers and sisters. How can we continue to amass wealth if more than 50 per cent of our family lives on or below the poverty line? How can we continue to eat up Nature’s natural resources so that future generations will have dire problems to survive? Our politicians and scientists would appear to be fast asleep. Who is going to wake them up?

as i see it, there will be a concert of stimuli, waking us up for a next evolutionary step
internally:
a longing for a better world for all sentient beings
a dissatisfaction with business as usual
externally:
an increasing exposure of the usual suspects as usurpers of our common flaws (fear, greed, ingorance, laziness)
an increase in systemic flaws (economical, ecological, social)
where & when exactly the dike will break remains unclear, mainly due to its emergent nature
Although I never paid much attention to the 2012 predictions, if it is a question of ‘when the dikes will break’it could be in the next two or three years or so according to the Mayan calender.
Such an event will work like the cleaning up of the Augean stables by Herakles/Hercules (The fifth labour of Heracles was to clean the Augean stables).
I.e.: it has happened before!
